National Theatre, Helsinki

The whole essence of the National Theatre is completely transformed from the new side

The Small Stage and the intermediate part of the new side of the National Theatre, completed in the 1950s, will be renovated. The project has a budget of around €60 million. The whole essence of the National Theatre is completely changed from the new side. The renovated venues will be ready for performance by the end of 2023.

The renovated building will enliven both the street scene in the city centre and Kaisaniemi Park. The glass surfaces, which total approximately 100 square metres installed in the sky lounge, are constructed with sound-insulating 8+8, 0.76, phon.

Designed by Onni Tarjantee, the National Romantic theatre building was completed in 1902 on the edge of Helsinki’s Rautatientor. The articulated section, built in the 1930s, was almost completely demolished, except for the exterior walls.

The project was carried out in cooperation with Lasiykköset Oy.
